Backpack Safety Tips for Kids

rocket boyIf you’ve got a little one heading off to school this year, we bet you’re worried about a million different things. As your partner in natural health, there’s one thing we’d like to help you understand a bit better-backpack safety!

Here are some of the top tips to help ensure your child has a safe and healthy school year when it comes to carrying their backpack.

1. Choose the right backpack. Ideally, the backpack should be no more than 10% of your child’s body weight.

2. Distribute the weight evenly. Avoid putting all of the heavy items on one side of the backpack.

3. Use all of the straps. The shoulder straps should be tightened so that the backpack rests snugly against your child’s back. The waist strap helps to distribute the weight more evenly and keeps the backpack from bouncing around while your child is walking or running.

4. Pack wisely. Put heavier items closer to your child’s back and lighter items near the front or top of the backpack.

5. Take breaks often. If your child is carrying a heavy backpack, encourage them to take a break every 20 minutes or so. This will help to prevent strain on their back and shoulders.

6. Speak up if you have concerns. If you notice that your child is struggling to carry their backpack, or if they seem to be in pain, talk to their teacher. It may be necessary to lighten their load.

7. Make an appointment with our practice. If your child is beginning to feel the weight of their backpack, we’d love to help make sure their body continues to function to the best of their ability. Call your Midtown NYC chiropractor today to book a gentle adjustment for your little one.
